Designing Smarter Job Visibility for a More Reliable Search Experience

Overview
Our job search experience originally surfaced roles based solely on the location a seeker entered during onboarding or in the search bar. While this allowed for basic browsing, it introduced major inconsistencies: customers couldn’t control what seekers saw, and seekers often searched in regions where the customer had no roles at all.
I led the redesign of a location-based visibility feature that standardizes which jobs appear to seekers. This allowed customers to deliver a predictable, frustration-free experience while reducing confusion and internal support load.

Some customers only had jobs available in a specific region, but seekers could search any location—even ones the customer didn’t support. This led to zero-result pages that felt broken, confusion where seekers assumed the customer had “no jobs,” and a surge in support tickets asking why roles weren’t showing up. Ultimately, customers had no control over ensuring seekers saw relevant opportunities.

I partnered closely with Customer Success, Support, and Data to validate the problem from all angles. Through customer interviews, support ticket analysis, and platform usage data, we uncovered exactly where the experience was falling short.

Introducing Location-Based Visibility
Partnering with Product and Engineering, I led the design of a location-based visibility setting that put customers back in control of what their seekers see. The challenge was creating a system that offered flexibility for customers while protecting data accuracy and maintaining a seamless seeker experience—and the final solution successfully achieved all three.

Job Seekers see different experiences depending on the customer’s settings: full location control when visibility is off, a disabled dropdown with a tooltip when a single region is enforced, or an enabled dropdown with an explanatory message when all states/provinces are allowed.
